17.10.2024

The first three canisters have been completed and transferred into storage at Posiva’s encapsulation plant as part of the Trial Run of Final Disposal. The spent nuclear fuel is packed in such canisters for the final disposal. Before starting on the fourth canister, a break has been taken in the Trial Run to allow adjustments and extra testing to be made on the equipment. On this video, Production Direction Karri Osara explains the purpose of the Trial Run of Final Disposal.

The Trial Run will next proceed to the underground facilities to test the operation of the final disposal repository excavated in the bedrock. The Trial Run of Final Disposal is designed for the demonstration of the functioning of the whole final disposal process and the capability of the personnel for industrial and safe final disposal operation. Instead of actual spent nuclear fuel, test elements without any radioactive materials are used in the Trial Run.
